About the Fair

Background

The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) is the international organisation made up of 170 countries responsible for registering or recognising universal or world exhibitions. Since its creation in 1851 until today, the character of universal exhibitions has evolved and the best and most dazzling things in the world have been exhibited.

The first universal exhibition, in London in 1851, was conceived to show the progress of the whole world: machinery, manufactures, sculptures, raw materials, all the fruits of the growing human industry and its unlimited imagination. After the Second World War, the fascination with material progress gave way to the promotion of human progress and international dialogue.

Today, the exhibitions regulated by the BIE have definitely become a showcase in which new advances in science and technology are presented, they facilitate cultural exchange and promote cities, regions, countries and economic sectors.

Expo Osaka 2025

Under the theme “Designing the future society for our lives,” the Japanese city of Osaka is preparing to welcome millions of people to the World Expo 2025. Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai will facilitate interaction between people with diverse values from around the world, giving rise to new human networks and creative endeavors. The Expo will share with the world hopes for a brighter future, overcoming the current global crisis, protecting people’s lives, and reflecting on life and lifestyles.

The Expo will take advantage of its location – 155 hectares on the artificial island of Yumeshima – to strengthen the connection between the sky and the sea by developing a ring that will connect all the pavilions. Like a large circular path, this two-kilometer mega walkable deck will have the society of the future as its guiding thread. The theme aims to promote co-creation by the international community in the design of a sustainable society that supports individuals’ ideas about how they want to live. Saving Lives, Empowering Lives and Connecting Lives are the three sub-themes of the Expo.
